Molecular Spectroscopy
Prof. Joanna McGouran
This course will focus on the three major spectroscopic techniques, approaches to their use in identification of chemical entities and an introduction to experimental equipment.
Ultraviolet Spectroscopy: Electronic energy levels, Beer-Lambert Law, Effect of p-conjugation.
Infra-red Spectroscopy: Molecular vibrations, Fingerprint and diagnostic evaluation of spectra, Detection of functional groups (X-H, CX and C=X).
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy: Nuclear spin, NMR experiment, Chemical shift and shielding, spin-spin coupling.
