Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction

The installation of our new SMART APEX single crystal CD diffractometer was completed on 29th June 2001.

The instrument was the first of its type in Ireland. It can collect data far faster than a conventional four-circle diffractometer giving a fast turn-around time.

The system allows collection of high-resolution data on poor quality crystals (small 0.1mm, poorly diffracting). It has a 1K x 1K CCD (Charge Couple Device) chip with new phosphor material and no optical fibre (1:1 demagnification ratio). Data processing uses SHELXTL programmes.

The crystallography team (Dr. T. McCabe and Dr. S. Draper) provide an external crystallography service for determining the solid-state molecular structure of crystalline material. To avail of this service please download a request form and send to tmccabe@tcd.ie.
