Professor Senge is a chemist and makes new molecules every day. These are prepared in his laboratory at Trinity College and they are used to find better ways to use the sunlight to make energy, to understand how nature works and to find new ways to make 'smart' molecules. He also works in medicine and tries to find new drugs to treat cancer. Whenever he has time, he travels to schools all over Ireland.
The topics of the workshops and presentations are various, but all are hands on experimental and the children actually do the experiments themselves under supervision.
In addition, Mathias also does experimental "show presentations" on chemistry during the summer months for whole schools or larger groups.
Sometimes he invites schools to TCD and then does experiments with them in the teaching labs.
These workshops are suitable for all PS ages, for infants more show experiments and simpler hands-on stuff. A workshop lasts for 1 h per class and topic. Normally, Mathias visits a school for a whole day and does 3-4 classes in a row.
Mathias has a range of chemistry, biochemistry, materials, environment and general science topics to talk about in secondary schools.
