Prof. Silvia Giordani received the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow award on December 17th in Bergamo, Italy.

Prof. Silvia Giordani was invited speaker at the Molecular Devices symposium, held at Queen’s University of Belfast on 14th December.

Prof. Silvia Giordani was invited by the European Commission to be a keynote speaker at Destination Europe, a forum for leading European research organisations, funders and industry, to present the opportunities they offer to researchers and innovators from anywhere in the world. The event, which ran from the 6-7th December, was held in San Francisco (US) and included a REA-organised session called "Marie Curie Actions: your research career in Europe".

Prof. Silvia Giordani received the LEONARDO UGIS award for a young researcher/communicator on December 3rd in Milan, Italy. The prestigious prize, intended to recognise both outstanding scientific achievements and excellent communication skills of young researchers, is awarded by the Italian National Museum of Science and Technology, the Italian Scientific Journalists Union – the 'Unione Giornalisti Italiani Scientifici' (UGIS) and Federchimica – PlasticsEurope Italia.
Jury members include:

  • Giovanni Caprara, in charge of the science section in Corriere della Sera and president of UGIS (the Journalist Union)
  • Roberto Cingolani, Scientific Director of IIT - Italian Institute of Technology
  • Fiorenzo Galli, Director General of the National Museum of Science and Technology
  • Fabiola Gianotti, Coordinator of the experiment Atlas - CERN
  • Giulio Giorello, Professor of Science Philosophy - Università degli Studi di Milano
  • Alberto Pieri, General Secretary of FAST - Federation of scientific and technical associations.
The motivation of the Jury of the Leonardo – UGIS award that selected Silvia Giordani over more than 80 candidates is “From the technical Institute Natta Bergamo to Trinity College Dublin the jump is significative. In between there is a linear and growing professional path. In addition to her evident scientific versatility, the numerous and prestigious international recognitions, the wide scientific production in the most qualified journals, her experience as visiting scientist and lecturer, her active participation to communicating science to the wide audience and the media, her promotion of the female role in science and research and that of young students”.

Prof. Silvia Giordani received the ROTARY Premio alla professionalita’ on November 19th in Bergamo, Italy.

Prof. Silvia Giordani was an invited speaker at the 19th National Youth Orientation Day, organized by Confindustria, held in Florence, Italy on 16 November 2012. The event was coordinated by Riccardo Luna, who entertained the public, composed of approx 1,000 high school students, with an interactive program. Summer Student Simona Morochnik wins prize for best poster at the SURE poster competition. Simona, an undergraduate student at the University of California – Santa Barbara in the United States (UCSB), joined the group of Prof. Silvia Giordani at the School of Chemistry during the summer months under the sponsorship of the SURE programme (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience). Simona, who originally comes from Los Angeles, CA is a bright third year student at UCSB where she is finishing her degree in Biology. She worked for 10 weeks together with postdoctoral fellow Ilaria Biondi on a project aimed at functionalising the surface of carbon nano-onions with a spiropyran derivative. Her results were presented at the SURE poster competition on August 22, where she was awarded the first prize for her presentation. Congratulations Simona!!!

          July 2012

ESOF 2012 was held in Dublin's convention centre from the 11th - 15th of July. ESOF is Europe's largest general science meeting and is held every two years in a leading Europe city. Prof. Giordani was an invited speacker at the Careers Section of the event "Engaging in a researcher's career in the 21st century" on the 12th of July and "Role models for mobility: portraits of women from the Marie Curie Fellowship Association" on the 13th of July. In her talks she shared her experience as a Marie Curie Fellow, as a woman in science and as a mentor for young students. She invited Charlotte Borra from the high school "Natta" in Bergamo (Italy) to talk about her passion in science and about her research as part of the Mentoring Juniors Project, designed and coordinated by Silvia Giordani.

Prof. Silvia Giordani spoke on Morning Ireland and Mooney Goes Wild about her research into "smart medicines", the 2012 L'Oréal-UNESCO UK & Ireland Women in Science Fellowship and careers for women in science.

Silvia Giordani Wins 2012 L'Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Fellowship

Prof. Silvia Giordani is the recipient of the 2012 L’Oreal-UNESCO UK and Ireland Fellowships For Women
In Science for her work on a new avenue towards “smart” medicines.

The eight finalists, short-listed from 229 applicants, were interviewed on 28 June at an awards ceremony held at the Royal Society in London by a panel of eminent scientists.

The judging panel comprised:
  • Chair - Professor Dame Athene Donald DBE FRS - Professor of Experimental Physics, University of Cambridge
  • Professor Lorna Casselton - Emeritus Professor of Fungal Genetics, VP & Ex Foreign Secretary the Royal Society, (FRS), University of Oxford & the Royal Society
  • Julie McManus – Head of Scientific, L’Oréal UK and Ireland, (Biochemistry)
  • Professor John O’Halloran - Head of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University College Cork
  • Dr Beth Taylor - Director of Communications & External Relations, Institute of Physics
  • Professor Naomi Chayen - Professor of Biomedical Sciences (Res Fellow), Head of Crystallization Group in Biomolecular Medicine, Imperial College London
  • Professor Matthew Rosseinsky - Professor of Inorganic Chemistry (DPHIL, FRSC, FRS), University of Liverpool

The four 2012 winners were announced on the evening of the 28th of June at an awards ceremony held at the Royal Society in London.
The Fellowships are awarded annually by L’Oréal UK & Ireland and the UK and Irish National Commissions for UNESCO, in partnership with the Royal Society. The £15,000 fellowships have been designed to provide practical help for the winners to undertake research in their chosen fields.

Welcome to Associate Professor Gagik Shmavonyan who joins the Giordani’s group as visiting Professor for three months to work on a project "Characterization of graphene and graphene based materials by Raman Spectroscopy /AFM" supported by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology STSM exchange, COST Action MP0901 "Designing Novel Materials for Nanodevices - from Theory to Practice (NanoTP)".

Prof. Giordani was an invited speaker at the 18th National Youth Orientation Day, organized by Confindustria, held in Milan on the 11th October 2011. The event was coordinated by Enrico Bertolino, who entertained the public, composed of approx 1,200 high school students, with an interactive program. The event was followed in live streaming by over 40,000 people.

Congratulations to Yulia who wins the prize for the Best Presentation at the SURE poster competition (TCD).

      
Prof. Silvia Giordani was an invited speaker at the “60 years and 60 Carbons: A Symposium on Fullerenes and Supramolecular Chemistry” to honor Professor Luis Echegoyen in his 60th Birthday, during the 43rd IUPAC World Chemistry Congress, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on the 2nd August 2011.  Oral presentations were given by his friends and collaborators on the general topics of fullerene and supramolecular chemistry.
