Dr. Amir Pakdel

Senior Postdoctoral Researcher


Research

Dr. Amir Pakdel joined Prof. Nicolosi’s group as a senior research fellow of Trinity College Dublin in January 2017. Prior to that, he served as an international research fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS; Tokyo, Japan 2015-2017), a research fellow of International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA; Tsukuba, Japan 2012-2015), and a junior research fellow of National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS: Tsukuba, Japan 2009-2012). He received his PhD in Advanced Nanomaterials from the University of Tsukuba (Tsukuba, Japan 2012), his MSc in Materials Selection and Characterization from the University of Tehran (Tehran, Iran 2007), and his BSc in Materials Science and Engineering from Shiraz University (Shiraz, Iran 2004).

During these years, the main focus of his multidisciplinary research work has been on the following topics:
- CVD synthesis, characterization, functionalization and properties of boron nitride (BN) and boron carbonitride (BCN) nanomaterials.
- Controlling the static and dynamic wetting properties of nanostructured films and coatings (from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity) via two approaches: (a) surface morphology manipulation, and (b) surface functionalization.
- Production and property improvement of metal- and polymer-matrix composites reinforced with different nano-/ micro-materials with emphasis on the interfacial features of matrix/second phase.
- Characterization of a broad range of organic/inorganic nanomaterials by electron microscopy (TEM, STEM, SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), laser flash analysis (LFA), and four-point probe method (4T sensing).
- Solid state synthesis of inorganic thermoelectric materials and improving their efficiency via nano-engineering.

He has received multiple awards for his research work so far, including: Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Award (2016), Tsukuba Expo Center Award (2015), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship Award (2014), and several scholarships from National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS; Tsukuba, Japan), State University of New York (SUNY; Binghamton, NY, USA), University of Akron (Akron, OH, USA), University of Kentucky (Lexington, KY, USA) and University of Tehran (Tehran, Iran).

His current research interests are:
- Synthesis and electron microscopy analysis of nanomaterials and nanocomposites,
- 3D printing of nanostructured bulk materials for renewable energy applications,
- Molecular-scale interactions at surfaces and interfaces.
